HST referendum: food for thought

Life is a challenging gig where the only constant seems to be change, though often (in a democracy) we can direct change by popular vote. Sometimes we do it (vote) by heart and don’t fully engage enough of our minds. We don’t always think the issue through carefully enough, or look far enough into the future before deciding on an action.

Session helps ranchers teach a cow new tricks

Bored, nothing to do?

Stampede ranch challenge well attended

Congratulations to all the local competitors who took part in the Ranch Challenge competition last weekend during the Williams Lake Stampede.

Canuck rioters need to seek perspective

Several deep heartfelt sighs, a brief phone conversation to commiserate (analyze where it all went wrong) goodbye, good night.

Riske Creek’s Ryan Jasper will be one of several locals who qualified to compete, from today until Sunday, in the B.C. High School Rodeo Finals at the Stampede Grounds. Jasper will compete in team roping, steer wrestling, tie down roping, bareback riding and bull riding.

High school rodeo finals start today

The BC High School Rodeo Finals (BCHSRF) begin today with a couple of events that are an integral part of the High School Finals weekend but not always held during the regular competitive portion of the rodeo.

Many ranching industry employees start at minimum wage

I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all of the B.C. High School Rodeo Finals competitors (families) who will be in town (starting today) for the last event in the B.C. High School Rodeo season; it’s a huge weekend in their young lives.

Terris Billyboy of 150 Mile House is shown here at the Williams Lake High School Rodeo in early May, maneuvering her grey horse through the pole bending pattern. Terris had a successful season in this event, qualifying in 11th place (top 12 advance) in the South Region standings to earn a berth in the upcoming provincial finals to be held here June 9-12. Billyboy was the lone Cariboo cowgirl to qualify for the provincials in the pole bending.

Locals earn spots at rodeo finals

The BC High School Rodeo Finals are being held in Williams Lake from June 9-12, 2011 and it is the first time in the history of high school rodeo in B.C. (since 1969) that we will be hosting the event.

BC Rodeo Association season underway

Competing and contesting in a sport where you have to pay an entry fee seems to bring out the will to try harder in most people; the sport of rodeo — even more so as the competitors usually bear all of the expenses involved themselves.

Win the cup for the ladies, OK?

Well, a lot of wishin’ and hopin’ and a little prayin’ seems to be a working formula as our hockey team advances ever farther down the trail to the ultimate ride’s end — hoisting the Stanley Cup (notice that we never touched that piece of silver Tuesday night)!

Ranchers dared to be different

Mostly in life, you get what you pay for and that holds true for both goods and services.

Ranchers love hockey, too

Good job — if ‘plan A’ was for the Vancouver Canucks franchise to fill (sell) as many playoff seats as possible, for the maximum number of games — they have executed on target so far.

Show appreciation for volunteers

The city streets are extra-populated with folks in cowboy hats as we welcome visitors to the 74th annual Williams Lake Bull Show and Sale and the 21st annual Williams Lake Indoor Rodeo.

Watch out — the wood ticks are out in full force

Be aware of Rocky Mountain wood ticks — they are out in force; in the past week I have removed two from my head (they stick like glue).

Cowboy Festival a rancher’s holiday, another good show

My husband and I enjoyed an outing to the 15th annual Kamloops Cowboy Festival this past weekend.
