Alberni hotels, motels form own destination marketing group

About half of the hotel and motel owners in Port Alberni have joined forces to market the region as one group.

Hotel and motel owners in Port Alberni have joined forces to guarantee the continuation of destination marketing activities in the Alberni Valley.

The newly formed “Port Alberni Hotel Destination Marketing Association” (PAHDMA) has as its founding members all of Port Alberni’s hotels and a leading motel, together representing more than 50 per cent of the hotel and motel rooms within the city limits.

A registered society in B.C., the marketing activities of PAHDMA are funded by its members through a two per cent destination marketing fee (DMF) charged on guest room accommodations.

The DMF is a levy and differs from the two per cent additional hotel room tax which expired Jan. 31 when Port Alberni hoteliers failed to obtain the alternate funding sources needed to present a satisfactory business plan to the province.

Other hotel communities in British Columbia administering a DMF currently include Vancouver and Victoria.

The purpose of PAHDMA is to increase the number of visitors to the city of Port Alberni and the Alberni Valley by promoting the region’s tourism assets, events and facilities externally, with a goal of attracting visitors to the community while encouraging overnight stays.

PAHDMA is looking forward to joining forces with local tourism operators, attractions and associations as well as local governments to jointly fund destination marketing efforts presenting Port Alberni in a  positive light on the tourism stage.
