All in the family

A mother, daughter, son trio have baked up a pretty sweet partnership, opening up the upscale pastry and coffee shop, Lemon Bakery.

Mom Barbara Butterfield and son Brad along with the head baker daughter Cady Dixon are keeping it all in the family with their art gallery like space at 20108 Fraser Highway.

“We started Lemon Bakery as a place for us to put our combined creative abilities to use,” said Brad Butterfield.

“Cady has an education in baking and pastry arts and a background in the restaurant industry.

“I have an education in visual merchandising and fine arts.”

Mom Barbara looks after the business end of things, he said.

Cady started out selling cupcakes at local farmers markets and found great success in that. Seeing how many people were enjoying her baking, she set out the idea of opening a bakery.

“A few years passed and the right things fell into place for the three of us and we decided to join forces and open in Langley,” said Brad.

The vision for the Butterfield family was to create an upscale artistic environment where people could come in and enjoy a cup of coffee and sandwich or pastry, he said.

“What sets us apart from most of the competition is our commitment to baking everything from scratch using local products wherever possible and our passion for creating interesting displays,” Brad said.

The butter cream they use is pure cream, no shortening. There are no preservatives in anything they make.

Lemon Bakery specializes in birthday and special occasion cakes and cupcakes. Decorating them is where Cady really shines, she said.

“Decorating cupcakes is definitely my favorite thing to create,” said Cady.

They also do catering menus.

Brad is itching to start the Christmas season, where he has lots of exciting displays planned. Already his art hangs on the walls, but the Butterfields are hoping to also showcase other local talent. Brad designed the look of the bakery.

“We are trying to create a gallery atmosphere here,” said Barbara.

“An interesting space to get a cup of coffee and a bite to eat.”

They are planning on introducing High Tea soon as well.

So how did the name Lemon Bakery come about?

“It’s a combination of my two children’s middle names actually,” beamed Barbara.

But funny enough, it is their lemon bars and lemon tarts that are selling like hot cakes, she said.

For the lunch crowd, they are offering freshly made sandwiches and soup. The sandwiches change daily. They roast the chicken in house.

Coffee is always on. They serve Fort Langley based Republica Coffee.

“We are really looking to support local,” said Barbara.

Lemon Bakery is located at 102-20108 Fraser Highway and is open six days a week, closed on Sundays.
