Artists help Habitat ReBrand

ReStore Art Opening at the Courtenay ReStore Dec. 2.

Last fall, Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North put out a call for artists to help ‘ReBrand Hope in the ReStore’ by painting their interpretation of what ‘building community’ meant to them on more than 60 shelving header panels.

On Wednesday, Dec. 2, Habitat will celebrate this community collaboration with the official unveiling of a remarkable collection of colourful and creative 10-inch by four-foot art panels in the Courtenay ReStore.

“We were thrilled with the response from the art community,” says Habitat’s executive director, Pat McKenna. “The ReBrand Hope Project celebrates the unique partnership we formed with local artists and the theme of ‘building community’ supports the guiding principles of our organization.

“The artwork will be permanently displayed around the perimeter of our two ReStores, creating a colourful and thought-provoking display for people to enjoy for years to come.”

April Dyck was one of about 40 artists who participated in the project.

The self-taught contemporary Comox Valley artist generously shared her time and talent to paint five panels. Dyck’s colourful paintings include abstract, representative, and figurative subjects, and she is well-known for her playfulness with perspective.

“When I paint, I enjoy trying to create pieces that provoke an emotional response in the viewer,” said Dyck.

“So I enjoyed creating these panels for the ReBrand Hope Project.”

Habitat invites the community to support April and other artists, along with its ongoing mission to build homes in our community, by attending the ReBrand Hope in the ReStore Art Opening at the Courtenay ReStore (1755 13th Street) from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2.  View over 30 panels and discover ‘building community’ through the eyes of local artists. Enjoy a dynamic guitar performance by the ever-popular Anela Kahiamoe, along with a no-host wine bar featuring 40 Knots Winery and cheese appetizers from Natural Pastures Cheeses. Admission is by donation. RSVPs appreciated. For more information or to pre-register, call 250-334-3777 ext. 224.
