The design of the Uptown Askew’s location earned special recognition with a jury award recognizing their unique approach to what is usually a typical building type.
A Lieutenant-Governor of B.C. award in architecture was presented at a gala event in Vancouver on Oct. 25 to Allen+Maurer Architects Ltd., who designed the new grocery store, with its combination of curved wood roof and large glass windows. In the award presentation, the design was praised for breaking out of the traditional box format and using environmentally sustainable design features.
“Part of a bigger plan for the Interior town of Salmon Arm, this grocery store is a stepping stone for future growth in a community where growth is much needed. Rather than simply facilitating commerce and cars, it takes a modern approach to energy use while also featuring traditional building materials reflective of the local economy,” it reads.
“In transforming a longstanding family business, the design team also recognized and built upon its special place at the heart of this small-town community.”
