Volunteer team Targets community events

It has been open for less than a year, but Target is already making community connections.

Open since May, the retail giant has committed 185 volunteer hours to a wide array of community projects around the Greater Vernon area. Kris Ponto, Target’s community captain, says they’re just getting started.

“We really want to keep that going,” said Ponto. “I like to look for a variety of activities to cater to different team member interest here at Target.”

Some of the local events the Target team has helped out with so far include serving food at the Upper Room Mission soup kitchen, weeding and gardening at the Patchwork Gardens at Okanagan College, launching boats at dragon boat races and stuffing brochures with United Way.

Community event organizers can e-mail Ponto at kristina.ponto@target.com for events or activities that they have.

Sterling Springs supports food banks

Sterling Springs Chicken of Falkland is getting a head start on Christmas spirit.

For the month leading up to Christmas, Sterling Springs will be donating 10 per cent of its total poultry sales to local food banks. The campaign runs from Nov. 24 to Dec. 24.

After operating a commercial poultry operation in Armstrong, Sterling Springs owners Hans and Lisa Dueck downsized their business to focus more on quality meat production, rather than quantity.

Sterling Springs chickens are free-run, medication-, hormone- and preservative-free, and have constant access to filtered water, top-quality feed and sunlight.

“It’s been a busy couple of years,” said Dowling. “We’ve had terrific feedback from all our locations and we’re building a really loyal customer following.
