Skills training on tap
Okanagan College is offering a training program for those who are unemployed and not an Employment Insurance client.
The Employment Skills Access program provides access to skills training for individuals to help them build career paths and secure long-term attachment to the labour market. The program also aims to meet the demands and shortages in the B.C. labour market.
The programs currently offered include wine and service industry training, and management skills for supervisors.
For more information, contact Roberta Sawatzky at 250-762-5445, ext. 4809, or e-mail her at rsawatzky@okanagan.bc.ca.
The program is being funded by the Ministry of Job, Tourism & Innovation under the Canada/B.C. labour market agreement.
Students earn a slice of higher learning
Vernon’s Dexter James is one of 33 employees to earn a $1,500 scholarship through Boston Pizza’s international scholarship program.
Since 2007, the program has recognized 160 employees for their achievements at work and school, as well as within their local communities.
“Boston Pizza is proud to support the academic aspirations of our employees through our popular scholarship program,” said Caroline Schein, vice-president of BP’s people and operations development.
“We recognize that our student employees are working with us for only a few years and will go on to work in other industries. The program is consistent with our philosophy of supporting our employees’ pursuit of a post-secondary degree while providing them with valuable life skills as they continue to work with us while going to school.”
