River Rocks reopens
After countless hours in renovations, the River Rocks Bistro in Enderby is ready to rock on.
Dora Groves, who formerly owned Pandora’s Bistro in Vernon in the 1990s, plans to host live music events every Saturday at River Rocks for July and August.
Groves was one of the first in Vernon to provide an open-door policy to bands, singles and duos who just wanted to jam. She also ran one of the only organic restaurants who offered predominantly vegetarian cuisine at the time.
That trend will continue at River Rocks Bistro on Cliff Avenue. On offer are homemade Okanagan fruit pies, carrot cake, organic breakfasts, lunches with organic greens, soups and fresh corn bread, and dinners featuring freshly caught B.C. salmon sizzling in butter and handpicked herbs.
Concerta funds Feed the Valley
Valley First’s Feed the Valley program has been recognized by Concentra Financial as one of Canada’s top credit union-driven community investment initiatives.
During May, Valley First was named a recipient of a $10,000 donation through Concentra’s emPOWERING Your Communities campaign. Feed the Valley was recognized for its embodiment of co-operative values and demonstrating credit union leadership within the community.
Established by Valley First in 2010, Feed the Valley aims to raise food, funds and awareness for food banks throughout the Okanagan, Similkameen and Thompson regions. Since its launch, Feed the Valley has generated more than $480,000 and close to 45,000 pounds in food donations.
Community members can support the Feed the Valley program by donating non-perishable food items or making cash donations at their nearest Valley First branch.
Original Joe’s making pint-sized donations
Original Joe’s Restaurant and Bar has selected Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Okanagan as the summer beneficiary of its community pint program for its locations in Vernon, Kelowna and West Kelowna.
The program is part of Original Joe’s overall community program, called the community care fund. Every four months, a beneficiary is selected regionally, and 50 cents from a featured pint is donated to the cause.
From now until Oct. 1, 50 cents from every Granville Island Brewing pint sold at the three locations will go to the charity.
Big Brothers Big Sisters develops and facilitates life-changing mentoring programs that inspire and empower children and youth to reach their potential, both as individuals and citizens.
Original Joe’s has 59 locations across Western Canada, including 17 across B.C.
