GUILDFORD — Shawn Davis uses the garage of his family’s Guildford-area home to package and ship Compy, a “bin barrier” made of a secret plant material and used in kitchen compost bins.

Davis, 24, a grad of Johnston Heights Secondary and also Sauder School of Business, says the product helps eliminate odours, absorbs moisture and keeps fruit flies away from the compost.

Davis’ cousin, Sam Sidhu, is his partner in the fledgling business venture (Compythat.com), which counts Choices and London Drugs stores among wholesale buyers.

Old Surrey on list of Top 100 Restaurants

Newton’s Old Surrey Restaurant has been named on OpenTable.com’s Top 100 Restaurants in Canada list. Only 20 B.C. restaurants made the cut, and Old Surrey was the only Surrey establishment named.

The website’s list is based on an analysis of more than 275,000 reviews of approximately 1,500 restaurants across the country.

Delta businesses up for ethics awards

Four Delta companies are finalists in the 5th Annual Business Ethics Awards.

The companies were nominated for demonstrating ethical business practices.

The awards program is sponsored by Delta’s Rotary clubs, The Kwantlen Polytechnic University chapter of the international business school Enactus, the Surrey Now, Surrey Leader and Delta Optimist.

“Well-qualified organizations in Delta were nominated this year,” said Leslie Abramson, award program leader. “We were seeking not the most ethical companies, because there are many out there, but those which demonstrated that they were models of ethical business practice to personify the four-way test of Rotary International.”

The test poses the questions: “Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”

The four finalists, from which a winner will be selected, are 505-Junk, Choices Markets, HoneyDo Lifestyle Assistant and Komal’s Kreations Inc.

Komal’s Kreations Inc. is an interior design and construction service and supply company; HoneyDo Lifestyle Assistant helps seniors to remain independent and connected in their community; Choices Markets is a Delta-based business with 10 stores in the Lower Mainland and one in Kelowna, and 505-Junk is a junk-removal and recycling company.

A dinner and award ceremony will be held at the Delta Town and Country Inn on Feb. 19. For more information call 604-946-0672.
