Camosun’s Jake Schuttinga stands atop the podium after taking top spot in carpentry at the 2016 Skills Canada National Competition.

Camosun College South Island Partnership student Jake Schuttinga showed off his golden carpentry skills at the 2016 Skills Canada National Competition held in Moncton, N.B. earlier this month.

Colin Hosakawa, a plumbing and pipe trades apprentice, won silver in the sprinkler systems category.

Schuttinga has competed in numerous competitions and has been coached by his secondary school woodwork teachers Joel Evans and Trevor Royle as well as by Camosun instructors Al Van Akker and Derek Smith. This year, he completed the dual-credit carpentry foundation program at Camosun College. He currently works for Road’s End Contracting.

Hosakawa is a member of UA Local 324 currently working for Cascade Fire Protection Ltd. He previously won gold at the B.C. provincial competition.

It was a banner year for the whole Skills Team B.C. who brought home 26 medals, with nine gold, seven silver and 10 bronze – a result that secured second overall in the country for medal count.

The Skills Canada National Competition is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. Each year, over 500 competitors from all regions of Canada participate in over 40 skilled trade and technology competitions.
