Municipality receives honour for recent business-friendly decisions

Don’t call it a bear market, but the City of Colwood has a new mascot in its presence following its acceptance of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business’s (CFIB) first “Order of the Bear” honour.

The award, which includes certificates and a teddy bear, is given to governments that are “taking action to support small business,” according to a column written by CFIB’s Laura Jones. Recipients can be honoured for actions such as putting things in plain language and getting rid of unnecessary requirements or “red tape.”

Earlier this year, Colwood eliminated annual business license fees, opting instead for a one-time perpetual fee.

The City has also made efforts to eliminate confusing jargon when it comes to setting up a business license.

“We’ve been trying to enhance those (business) relationships and doing some on-the-ground work with the Chamber of Commerce and looking at ways that we can bring things closer to home,” said Mayor Carol Hamilton.

A former small business owner herself, she recognizes what “red tape” can mean for someone who is trying to begin their own company.

As for the teddy bear, it currently resides in Hamilton’s office, but should find a home up front once some renovation work is completed at City Hall.

“There’s been a nonstop stream of people coming in for a hug,” she said, laughing.
