Municipalities recognized in top three spots for respective categories

The City of Colwood is among the top three finalists in SmallBusinessBC’s Open for Business Awards.

The annual program recognizes communities that have “created a friendly environment for small businesses.”

Colwood was shortlisted as one of three medium-sized communities with populations between 5,000 and 25,000 residents. The top three contenders also include Dawson Creek and the Township of Spallumcheen.

“As a fast-growing seaside community, Colwood offers an increasing number of commercial opportunities for small business owners,” Mayor Rob Martin said in a statement.

“Colwood looks for innovative ways to attract businesses and help them thrive while enhancing our understanding of their needs and expectations.”

Saanich is recognized in the top three for the large community category (25,000 residents and more) alongside Campbell River and Coquitlam.

The Open for Business Awards were launched in 2011 to celebrate communities where small businesses flourish. Created in partnership with the Province of B.C. and the BC Small Business Roundtable, nominees are selected for showcasing their “commitment to supporting the growth and success of the small business sector and looking for innovative solutions to drive economic development within their communities.”

Ucluelet, Harrison Hot Springs and Lumby are among the contenders for the under 5,000 residents category. Winners will be announced on Feb. 21 at the Small Business BC Awards Gala in Vancouver.
