Kelowna around the same time, the early 1970s.

Okanagan Lake has a new landmark with the newly commissioned Joe Bulach Pump Station just north of McKinley Road. The pump station was named after Joe Bulach, a long-time resident of the Glenmore Valley and a tireless advocate of the water industry in the valley. Bulach has been a trustee of the Glenmore-Ellison Improvement District (GEID) for over 40 years and the chairman of the board of trustees for more than 20 of those years. A pump station on the lake has been Bulach’s dream and that of his fellow GEID trustees for many years. Together they worked through many challenges and roadblocks to build a station to replace the older creek system supplying water from Postill Lake, built nearly 100 years ago by the early settlers of Glenmore and Ellison. The new station will supply pumped Okanagan Lake water to the majority of the district’s 15,000 residents.
Jeff Robinson, associate lawyer with Rush Ihas Hardwick LLP, has joined the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce board for the remaining portion of Sally Ginter’s term after she moved away from Kelowna. Robinson has been involved with the Kelowna Chamber as an integral member of their policy committees, volunteering a significant number of hours in assisting with researching and drafting their policy submissions to the provincial and national chamber meetings and assisting with the presentation of their policy submissions at the recent Canadian Chamber AGM.

Lawyer Glen Johnson is bringing a new type of legal service to the Johnson Law Office in Kelowna. To make legal services more affordable and control costs, Johnson will handle most matters on an unbundled basis. Clients decide what help they need on portions of their matter. For example, someone who wishes to sue for personal injuries will schedule a time slot and get advice on how to draft the pleading, how to serve the document and the steps involved in the course of the action. They will leave the office and handle their own file until they need further advice on how to prepare for the next step in the proceeding or if they would like representation at court, or a settlement conference. If the client is faced with a family law dispute, they may need help to bring or contest a child custody applicant in court. They would come in for advice on the process and documents that need to be prepared and they would also be given reference to court form websites. Clients are billed only for the time they are assisted. Due to the low overhead Johnson will charge less than half the usual billing rate. He feels the high cost of fees create a barrier to access justice for an increasing number of people. Matt Cherrille, former broadcaster and Capital News sports columnist, recorded his first ever hole-in-one at Black Mountain Golf Course, playing in the Ironman tournament. Using a five wood, he aced the 230 yard drive off the tee, one of the longest hole-in-ones recorded at that course.
