This week’s column is dedicated to Steve Muenz who passed away July 14. He will be missed by his family, colleagues and friends. Personal condolences to Sandi and his entire family.

QB Gelato (Quanto Basta, meaning As much as you need. No more. No less.) has opened at 1884 Dayton Street in Landmark 6. Owned and operated by Victor Laderoute and Kevin Bojda, this is not your ordinary gelato and sorbet shop. Both Victor and Kevin attended the Italy Gelato University and use traditional “pozzetti’s” from Italy to preserve the temperature, light and quality of their product. With pozzetti’s, the product is also displayed differently. They offer a tasting bar with customer engagement and an exceptional experience. QB use local dairy products and incorporates local ingredients into their inventive flavours. All products are made in-house from scratch fresh daily in an open-style kitchen. The #1 best seller is Holy Cacao which is a vegan sorbet. Other popular flavours are green goddess, chocolate seduction, coco-mango, carrot cake, salted caramel, orange blossom and purple dream, and that’s just a few. There were so many to try, all were incredible and they change daily. Madeleine Saikaley is the head gelato maker. Open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Call 250-861-6622 www.qbgelato.com.

France honoured the 2014 Chardonnay Icewine and San Francisco’s award was for the 2013 Semillion Icewine. These are two of the top awards in the wine world. It is a triumph for the truth that organic grape growing and organic wine making is not only the best for our health and for the earth, but also the best tasting, says Summerhill proprietor Steve Cipes. Just launched, Happipad.com is a new rental website made in Kelowna for Kelowna. The team behind Happipad.com is Kenneth Chau and Cailan Libby. They started working on Happipad.com over a year ago when it was decided that they wanted to make the process of securing long-term rentals faster and more efficient. Happipad.com is more than a listing service. Everyone is verified (as a real person), you can sign agreements on line and it’s a place where landlords post and tenants browse. The website allows renters and landlords to advertise, search, screen, sign and review, all in a few clicks. Tenants can browse and then accept applications and a landlord can offer multiple roommates one contract. Their downtown office is located in the CoLab, a shared work space for social entrepreneurs at 1405 St. Paul Street. Visit www.happipad.com or call Ken Chau at 250-899-5846.

MTL Montreal Food is owned by partners chef Mathew Morazain and Bernie Mahapatra. The restaurant is open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. serving both breakfast and lunch Monday to Friday and brunch on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. Chef Morazain calls his restaurant a classic scratch diner. Wine and craft beers are available and they have a lovely covered patio. All menu items are house-made from scratch. I attended a reception that was catered by chef Morazain and the food items were different, beautifully displayed and delicious. A few days later I attended another function that just happened to be at the restaurant and, like the catered event, was delicious. I had the buttermilk biscuits with breakfast and wow, they were tasty. A great alternative to toast. Call 778-484-3888 or www.mtlrealfood.com.
