DeHart: Reviving old-fashioned flair to the barber shop

Spina wants to re-invent the barber shop as he feels guys need a place to go and hang out and talk about “guy stuff.”

This week’s column is dedicated to our cousin, Margaret “Margie” DeHart, who passed away suddenly last week in Penticton (Naramata) where the family lived for many years. This quote was found in her notebook after she passed away: “Gratitude is like a cleansing healing agent for the soul. It moves us away from what we don’t have, to what we do have.” That says it all.

Tony Spina has been a licensed master barber/stylist for 33 years. He previously owned a successful unisex salon in Vancouver for 19 years and has now opened Swagger Modern Barber at 1B-1155 KLO Rd. (corner of KLO and Gordon).

Although old fashioned barber shops are dying off, Spina wants to re-invent the barber shop as he feels guys need a place to go and hang out and talk about “guy stuff.” His shop is small, has a masculine feel and he works alone. He has a varied clientele ranging from students and professionals to seniors. Spina offers old-fashioned barber cuts, modern haircuts, colours, including streaks and grey blending and even old-fashioned hot towel shaves, all at reasonable prices. Appointments only. Call 778-484-2902.
