This week’s column is dedicated to our cousin, Margaret “Margie” DeHart, who passed away suddenly last week in Penticton (Naramata) where the family lived for many years. This quote was found in her notebook after she passed away: “Gratitude is like a cleansing healing agent for the soul. It moves us away from what we don’t have, to what we do have.” That says it all.

The week of April 7 to 13 has been proclaimed Barbershop Harmony Week around the world. In Kelowna, The Barbershop Harmony Society (new name and logo) are also celebrating 75 years of song. The Kelowna society chapter, called Chordial Invitation, has been in existence since 1972 with the goal to further the society’s vision of building a better world through singing. They have assisted many local charities and regularly entertain at the many retirement resorts and communities in the area. Its members come from all walks of life and ringing chords in the four voice parts which together create the unique close knit A Capella harmony that characterizes barbershop music is the only common bond. The team from Loyal Hair Therapy (Loyal Wooldridge, CEO) is one of the finalists in the L’Oreal Professional’s Colour Trophy contest set for June in Toronto after winning the provincial style contest in Vancouver on March 5. Each team submitted before and after images of their model inspired by L’Oreal’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection. The Sons of Italy, Galileo Lodge Okanagan presents A Taste from Italy’s Heel on Sunday, April 7, at the Theatre Room in Okanagan College, 3 p.m. The public is invited to discover the tastes, (food sampling to follow) sights and sounds from the Region of Puglia, Italy. The group Tarantula Garganica from Puglia will be performing in Kelowna, currently on tour across Canada. The band name is originated by the style of music they write and play and by their homeland; it is a name that symbolizes the musical traditions of Puglia.
