A British/European streetscape theme is planned for renovations at the corner of Hudson Avenue and Alexander Street NE, a theme the majority of council approves.

The main sticking point for city staff, however, regarding the plans of developer Bill Laird, comes down to canopies versus awnings. While awnings are temporary, canopies are not.

Renovation plans include canopies that would extend as far into Alexander and Hudson as the existing canopies do, so city planning staff recommended that council not approve the site variances requested because they do not allow for current zoning stipulations for city right-of-ways.

A consideration, for instance, is that the city’s  town centre transportation plan notes one future option for Alexander would be a two-way street.

Council members present at the city’s March 6 planning meeting voted unanimously to move the application forward to the next meeting of council on March 12 for consideration.
