A fire Thursday afternoon temporarily closed a South Surrey restaurant “until further notice.”
Deputy fire Chief Dan Barnscher said firefighters were called to Tap Restaurant, at 101-15350 34 Ave., at 1:30 May 1.
Reported as an oven fire, crews quickly determined the source was a deep-fryer.
“The oil in the deep-fryer, somehow it ignited,” Barnscher said.
Barnscher said no one was injured in the fire. Patrons and employees of the restaurant, as well as those in neighbouring businesses, “made it out safely,” he said.
The bulk of damage was caused by the water – including the restaurant’s sprinkler system – used to extinguish the blaze, Barnscher noted.
There was “very little fire damage.”
The restaurant needs Fraser Health’s OK before it can reopen, Barnscher said.
