WestShore Chamber lauds positive signs of continued growth on the West Shore

Ashlea Pearson, human resources manager for the Home Depot in Langford, said the store is always looking for talented people who want to pursue a career with the company.

Ashlea Pearson, human resources manager for the Home Depot in Langford, said the store is always looking for talented people who want to pursue a career with the company.

This week’s job fair at Home Depot is another positive sign of continued growth on the West Shore, said Julie Lawlor, executive director of the WestShore Chamber of Commerce.

Lawlor, who was provided a sneak peak at the 2016 census through BC Statistics, said the “initial snapshot” indicates that the growth on the West Shore is continuing, particularly in Langford.

“We’re delighted to see growth and development in terms of jobs, housing and amenities for people,” she said. “The challenge all over the world is that everything is changing so quickly. The fact that the West Shore is continuing on a positive trajectory is a good sign for employment and economic growth.”

The job fair on Wednesday at Home Depot’s Langford location targeted filling 22 full and part-time positions in various departments, including sales associates, lot associates, cashiers and the lumber yard, said Ashlea Pearson, store human resources manager.

“We’re looking for individuals with a great passion for customer service,” she noted.

Compensation for all positions varies depending on experience and the position being filled.

“Home Depot has a great orientation program with a focus on customer service, and great training on product knowledge,” she said.

“We also have a fantastic tuition reimbursement plan to support employees who want to further their education.”

Employees are eligible for up to $3,000 a year in tuition during the first three years with the company, and up to $5,000 after three years. “That helps people of all ages consider going to school to broaden their professional development,” Pearson said.

If you were unable to make it to the job fair, the Langford Home Depot anticipates hiring more staff during the spring. “We’re always looking for talented associates to grow their career within the company,” she added. “There’s always lots of opportunities in that regard.”

The current hiring blitz is not limited to the West Shore, as Home Depot looks to hire close to 1,100 people across B.C. Job fairs are scheduled in February throughout the province.
