WINTER weather had extended the construction schedule of the 24 Davis Ave. social housing units for seniors and people with disabilities but the anticipated occupation date hasn’t changed.

The modular units arrived in town last June, and preparation work for the development on the former farmers market site on the 4600 block of Davis Ave. has been underway since last summer.

An original completion date of mid-January has now been pushed back to March with an occupation date set for May.

Remaining work includes siding, hydro connections, trim, touch-up to the interior, landscaping and paving.

The housing project is part of a federal and provincial program in which the senior governments provide the money while the municipalities provide the land.

In Terrace, that meant the city turning over the former farmers market location and spending $75,000 on two adjacent lots so the number of units could be increased from 20 to 24.

The residents for the development have not yet been selected. BC Housing has received 29 applications so far, and will be reviewing all applications this month.

While it did get some proposals from local organizations looking to operate the development, they were deemed not financially viable. The housing development will instead be managed and operated by BC Housing.
