Carole Fawcett of Vernon has become the second clinical hypnotherapist in Canada to be named an associate member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
Fawcett is a master practitioner of counselling psychology with the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association.
According to Dr. Fred Janke, associate professor of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta: “A clinical hypnotherapist is someone who has been trained in using the art of hypnosis together with therapeutic intervention to bring about improvement or healing in a variety of clinical conditions and negative behaviours.
“A well-trained hypnotherapist will be able to apply knowledge and training to establish and manage the subconscious root cause of negative behaviours such as fears, phobias (and) anxiety.”
The field of hypnotherapy does not have a national association that monitors the profession.
“Being recognized by the College of Family Physicians is a very important step in the acknowledgement of hypnotherapy as an effective modality and helps to raise the professional bar,” said Fawcett, who was sponsored by a local physician for her membership in the college.
