Wendell Johnston, a Golden local since 1972 says he has been painting houses and businesses in Golden for just as long.
“I’m from the greater Toronto area, my wife and I had never been to Western Canada. So we thought we would leave Toronto and start a life in BC. Vancouver was our destination but after visiting Banff and Jasper, we fell in love with the area. But when we got to Golden and camped here we thought ‘why would we leave this beautiful place for another city.’ It’s little twists of fate in your life.”
Johnston went up and down the street looking for work and quickly began painting, at that time, two days a week. Years later he has begun a family business with his sons helping him paint as well.
“My sons started painting with me before they were done high school. Reagan is an artist so he has a real touch to it and Ryan is really good at faux finishing. Robin, my daughter, has been working with us for a long time too. She knows everything about the trade. ”
Johnston says that the family supplies the product when painting a house and also do consulting. “The right colour ads warmth to a house. We just finished doing a house that had a very cold colour and we completely transformed it. We help people decide what colours would work best.”
“It’s very satisfying to go into someone’s house and make a huge change and make people happy. I do commercial work and work in the National Park also so on average I do about eight houses a year.”
Johnston says that they also do major repair jobs as well such as dry wall and fixing stippled ceilings.
“We have been at it for a long time and we enjoy doing it. People say ‘wow you’re still doing it’ but things get better over the years. People don’t know everything about painting and if they think they do they might as well quit. I read continually about painting and keep up to date. It’s ever changing which makes our jobs easier and faster.”
