Kelowna developers partner on Central Green

Al Stober Construction partners with Mission Group to develop city’s first sustainable community

Two prominent companies in Kelowna’s development community, Al Stober Construction Ltd. (ASC) and Mission Group Homes have teamed up to see the vision for Central Green come to reality. Under a new partnership, Mission Group Homes will lead master planning for the site and develop three residential buildings along the community park.

“We take pride in our properties and our dedicated staff, and Mission Group shares our commitment to build iconic spaces while providing exceptional customer service,” said Al Stober. “Kelowna residents have long been waiting for the Central Green community to take shape and we now have two long-standing companies combining our dedication and creativity to transform this key location into the new hub of Kelowna.”

ASC purchased the land on the corner of Harvey Avenue and Richter Street across from Kelowna Central School from the City of Kelowna for $6 million in the fall of 2014. This site is the former home of the old Kelowna Senior Secondary School (KSS).

“We’re excited to be part of Central Green and the inspired green living it embodies,” says Jonathan Friesen, CEO of Mission Group Enterprises. “Al Stober Construction is one of Kelowna’s most respected builders and together we’ve taken great effort to hold true to the vision for this interconnected community designed to promote a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly lifestyle.”

Central Green will be Kelowna’s first community that is certified in Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). This LEED-Certified neighbourhood will combine green building practices with smart growth principles such as development density, proximity to transit, land-use, and multi-modal transportation.

The parcels of land set aside for new construction sits adjacent to a future 5-acre community park, Rowcliffe Park. The City is set to begin construction of the new park in 2017.

Established in 1962, the family-owned ASC has operated a full-service property management and land development company in Kelowna. For over 50 years, ASC has compiled an impressive portfolio of residential and commercial properties throughout the Okanagan, including the six renowned Landmark Centre buildings.

Named the Canadian Home Builders Association 2014 Okanagan Multi-Family Builder of the Year, Mission Group has been nationally recognized for construction excellence, Built Green® standards and exceptional customer service. Founded in 2004, Mission Group Homes has completed numerous multi-family communities in the Okanagan and Lower Mainland. In 2015, the Kelowna-based builder celebrated its 1,000th homeowner.

ASC will lead development of the mid-rise buildings along Harvey Avenue that will offer both rental housing and commercial spaces. Mission Group Homes is set to begin construction on park-side residential homes at Central Green next spring.

The updated master plan for Central Green is planned to go before City Council at the end of September.
