Langley fundraiser buys mattresses for care facility

Mattresses bought

Arestaurant crawl through downtown Langley City back in May has this week translated to some much needed mattresses to help make the residents at Langley Lodge more comfortable.

Each year, the Rotary Club of Langley Sunrise hosts a “taste” fundraiser, and this was the largest year ever – in large part due to the sponsorship and support from six Langley restaurants: Choo Choos, Ban Chok Dee, Shiraz Grill, Match Eatery, Old Yale Bistro, and Rendezvous Pub.

But of course, it was the number (174) of hungry supporters who ultimately came out to eat and who made it such a successful fundraiser – generating $5,500 for the lodge, said Rotarian and event organizer Patrick Matiowski.

Star struck

Cuddling up to Chewbacca, having a light saber fight with Darth Vader, detecting the presence of ghosts with the Ghostbusters, and swashbuckling with Jack Sparrow… these were among the highlights of the Toy Traders grand re-opening this weekend.

Literally hundreds of happy kids “of all ages” came through the new store on Saturday and Sunday, and were immediately mesmerized when they came around the first corner only to discover some of their favourite movie characters had come to life in the store.

The looks of shock, glee, amazement, delight, and even a few expressions of fear on the children’s faces was what made all the preparations for the weekend party worthwhile for store owner Matthew Purdy.

“Obviously it was a huge success, and not just in the money raised for charity but in that everyone seemed to have a great time,” Purdy told the Langley Advance.

Between a charity barbecue and picture taking (with the movie characters) by donation, the open house managed to raise $2,784.37 for the Langley Shrine Club, which will in turn give it back to the community.

Participants included (above) Langley’s own Peter Pusch, Surrey’s David Laenen, and Aldergrove’s George Huber made up the Ghostbuster team.
