Leslie McConnell named new Rotary president

The Rotary Club of Abbotsford has named Leslie McConnell as its new president. McConnell has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Abbotsford since 2008 and has served on the board as treasurer and president-elect.

McConnell is the Principal Partner of MNP, a national public accounting firm. She works with owner managed businesses, with a niche in agriculture. A resident of Abbotsford since 1996 with her husband and daughters, McConnell has served her community in a number of ways. Most recently, she served as a director on the Abbotsford Hospice Board for seven years.

“I look forward to being the president of the Rotary Club of Abbotsford, it is such an honor to do so,” says Leslie. “The Rotary theme during my presidential year is “Be a Gift to the World.” We are urged to give the gift of time, talent and knowledge to improve lives in communities across the globe. This theme describes some of the reasons I joined Rotary seven years ago and most certainly describes the Rotary Club of Abbotsford.”

Also inducted to the board of directors were: Sara Lawson, Stacey Irwin, Carla Cadieux, Andrea Lingren, Kenda Allen, Yvonne Douma, Doris Woodman-McMillan, Shirley Wilson, David Inwood, Marion Keys, Bruce Beck and Hugh Ellis.

The Rotary Club of Abbotsford (#136) was the first Rotary club to be chartered in Abbotsford, British Columbia in 1950. Our club is part of Rotary District 5050 that is made up of fifty-seven clubs and approximately 3,000 members in both the United States and Canada.

This Rotary Club meets every Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. at the Phoenix Lounge at 33780 King Road, Abbotsford, British Columbia.Our Rotary Club is directed and guided by a Board of Directors which is comprised of: a President, Past President, President-Elect, President-Nominee, Secretary, Treasurer and Directors. In the Rotary Club of Abbotsford these directors are responsible for the areas of Club Service, International Service, Community Service, Fundraising, Public Relations and Membership.Club Service arranges for guest speakers, music, and front desk support for each weekly meeting.International Service is responsible for Youth Programs and International Projects, which allows our club to interact with people around the world. The Rotary Foundation and Polio Eradication, among others, are part of International Service.Community Service involves supporting local community projects around the City of Abbotsford and our annual scholarship/bursary program available to high school students in the local school district.Public Relations looks after media initiatives to increase the awareness and image of Rotary, the weekly news bulletin, website and social media activities.Fundraising activities include such events as the Million Dollar Hole in One, Oktoberfest and other Rotary fundraising initiatives held throughout the Rotary year. Finally there is Membership, which is responsible for member growth and new member development.All members of the Rotary Club of Abbotsford are actively involved in several committees to ensure the Rotary Club of Abbotsford’s commitment to Service Above Self. Please contact us if you have questions or are interested in becoming a member.
