Local breweries win national awards

Craft brewers in the Okanagan win at Canadian Brewing Awards

Craft brewers in the Okanagan keep gaining recognition, this time at the Canadian Brewing Awards.

Bad Tattoo Brewing, located on Estabrook Drive in Penticton, were awarded a silver medal in the North American Style Amber Lager for their entry of Los Muertos Cerveza Negra. Lee Agur, co-owner, and Robert Theroux, head brewer, were in Ottawa last week to pick up the awards.

“It is one thing for us to say we have amazing beer, but for us to be nationally recognized as having great beer is a whole other level. Did you see how excited Robert was? It was awesome. We are very fortunate to have an amazing team at Bad Tattoo and we look forward to creating more delicious beer for everyone,” said Agur.

A widely recognized symbol of quality brewing in Canada, the Canadian Brewing Awards is the only true national competition that summons breweries from across the country to compete in a blind tasting to determine who brews the best beer in a variety of style categories. There were more than 1,700 entries from over 333 different breweries and cideries.

Judged by a panel of certified beer judges, Bad Tattoo’s amber lager, Los Muertos Cerveza Negra is a medium dark, malt-forward lager that is crisp and refreshing. It scored highly in all five criteria: aroma, appearance, flavour, mouth-feel and overall impression.

The Canadian Brewing Award comes right after winning a Gold Medal at the Calgary International Beer Awards two weeks previous for it’s Full Sleeve Stout.

Cannery Brewing Co., located on Ellis Street in Penticton, won gold in the Baltic Porter category for their entry Kick in de Kok Baltic Porter. They also won bronze in the Flavoured Stout/Porter category for their entry Thornless Blackberry Porter.

“It was a real honour to bring these awards back to Penticton. These awards recognize and celebrate the very best in Canadian Brewing, and we are thrilled that two of our beers were recognized,” said Ross Thompson, co-owner and head brewer of Cannery Brewing.

The Baltic Porter is a limited release seasonal beer, brewed with traditional German malts and noble hops. Thompson said like most Baltic Porter’s it is strong and sweet. The Thornless Blackberry Porter also started as a limited release, but because it became so popular it ensured its continuous production for more than a decade.

“It was wonderful to participate in the Canadian Brewing Awards and to celebrate with so many other passionate craft brewers from across Canada. We’re thrilled to be a part of this exciting and evolving industry,” said Thompson. “We are particularly proud of the results for B.C.’s craft breweries with over one third of the total awards going to breweries in B.C.”
