New Asian/Mexican grocery store opens in Courtenay

Goods Grocery moves, changes focus

Goods Grocery has a new home – and a new focus.

The store, formerly on Ryan Road East, is now open at 140 Headquarters Road in Courtenay.

Mark and Glenda Turner have owned Goods Groceries since 2009. Mark said the move coincided with the store’s new target market.

“We started specializing in Mexican and Filipino groceries at the other store and we just felt that for the majority of our customers, that store was a little too far out,” he said. “Some people don’t drive, the buses don’t run that great, so we figured this would be a more central location.”

He said the move has provided immediate dividends.

“What I have noticed already is I am seeing customers at this new location two or three times a week, where at the old location, I am seeing them about once a month. And I am seeing new customers who didn’t even know we sold Mexican and Asian products at the other store.”

Whereas the old location had a mix of Canadian and international products, the Headquarters Road location will be strictly an Asian/Mexican grocery.

“Right now the majority is Mexican and Filipino goods, but I have just put in an order for Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese products,” he said.

He encourages anyone who has a desire for specific foods from the aforementioned areas to contact him.

“That’s how we have pretty much developed the product line that we have – people will come in and ask us, as we will add it to our orders,” he said.

Store hours are 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
