OUT AND ABOUT: Fond farewells and happy hellos to Gazette staff

We welcome Gary Howell to the Goldstream News Gazette team

Where has all the good summer weather gone? As we approach the end of the second week of July, it is hard to believe that the weather is continuing to be so cold and windy.

That said, I would like to use this space to say a big thank you to Shelley Westwood, who worked for Black Press for over six years and is starting her new adventure in Winnipeg closer to her family.

Shelley will be greatly missed by this office and by all of her Goldstream News Gazette family and clients she has worked with over the years.

I would also like to welcome Gary Howell who will be taking over for Shelley. Gary brings a wealth of knowledge to the position and looks forward to meeting with everyone.

Tonight (July 13) at the Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort and Spa there will be a joint mixer for the Westshore Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Victoria from 5 to 7 p.m.

Also from the Chamber will be a Coffee Talk with Coastal Offices, at their new office space at #132-328 Wale Rd. on July 26 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. for more information on these events contact the Westshore Chamber office at 250-478-1130.

There was some very interesting news last week about the decision to place a new gaming facility in Victoria. Even more exciting are the plans afoot to make significant additions to the View Royal Casino. We are anxiously awaiting an announcement from BCLC so watch your Gazette for further updates.

Stillpoint Community Acupuncture are looking for donations for our local food bank for the month of July with their Christmas in July promotion. Bring in a non-perishable food item, toiletry or cash donation and Stillpoint will give you $5 which you can use towards a treatment for you or a loved one.

This promotion is valid at both locations #102-3212 Jacklin Road and 1008 Russel St. in Victoria West.

The second Langford Tri-athlon will take place this Sunday, July 17 beginning with one loop swimming in the clear, shallow water of Langford Lake. For more information on this event, visit westshoretriathlon.com.

The Canvas Soccer Camp will be held July 18 to 22 from 9 a.m. to noon daily at the Westhills and Goudy turf fields in Langford. The camp is open to children in Kindergarten to Grade 8 and will be led by Kenny White who played professional soccer in Germany and in the U.S. with the New Orleans Gamblers.

The camp provides a great way for children to get out and play, while also growing in sport skill and healthy self-confidence. The cost is $55 per camper and includes a camp t-shirt, sport bottle, ball and great sport instruction. For information contact jeremiah.canvascamps@gmail.com.
