The 19th annual Quickturn Metalworking Excellence Awards for high school students has taken place

The 19th annual Quickturn Metalworking Excellence Awards for high school students has taken place.

The objective of the contest is to encourage excellence in metalwork classes and is open to all metalworking students in high school in Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby, Lumby, Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Lake Country and Kelowna.

“Any metalworking student in the 2015/2016 school year was eligible to enter,” said Randy Schellenber, president of Vernon’s Quickturn Production Machining.

“Projects of the students’ choice were judged on workmanship, technical merit and ingenuity.”

This year’s winners are:

First: Eric Nenzen of W.L. Seaton Secondary in Vernon for a knife

Second: Alexandre Smith of Mount Boucherie Secondary in West Kelowna for a Gondorian helmet

Caleb Musfelt-Lycar of Kelowna Secondary in Kelowna for a crocodile ring

An honourable mention went to Cole Hoefer of Pleasant Valley Secondary in Armstrong for a knife.

The first place finisher received $350 while second place got $250 and there was $150 for third place.

Quickturn donated measuring instruments and tools to the participating schools for their metalworking classes.
