Restaurants kindle conservation

A foursome of Vernon restaurants will be setting the mood for not only romance, but also energy efficiency, Thursday, Oct. 27.

A foursome of Vernon restaurants will be setting the mood for not only romance, but also energy efficiency, Thursday, Oct. 27.

Amarin Thai, Crush Bistro, The Italian Kitchen and The Range Restaurant at Predator Ridge are among 110 B.C. restaurants that will turn off the lights and invite customers to dine by candlelight to raise awareness of energy efficiency and conservation.

B.C. Hydro’s candlelight conservation dinner, now in its third year, is presented in partnership with The Fresh Outlook Foundation to bring awareness to the benefits and cost savings of conserving energy. Last year, participation tripled over year one, with more rural community restaurants getting on board.

Vernon will offer a variety of dining options, from the romantic setting of The Range to the hip and bustling Crush Bistro on 30th Avenue. The Italian Kitchen already has experience in the candlelight dinner department.

“We lost power at Christmas one year and the restaurant served dinner the entire evening by candlelight only,” said owner Paul Moore.

Each Vernon restaurant will offer an exclusive discount or special offer, ranging from free desert with purchase of an entrée to 15 per cent off dinner (exclusive of alcohol). Amarin Thai is offering 15 per cent off its dinners from Oct. 23 to 27.

Visit www.bchydro.com/candlelight to see all the details of the participating Vernon restaurants and what they are offering for the event.

Each year B.C. Hydro hosts Power Smart Month in October to increase awareness about the benefits and ease of using energy efficiently at a time when electricity consumption begins to increase for the winter.
