Ride-hailing service nearly ready to start up in Nanaimo

Lucky to Go planning to launch Oct. 1

A ride-hailing company says it’s ready to launch its operations in Nanaimo starting in October.

Lucky to Go, a Victoria-based company approved by the Passenger Transportation Board to operate B.C.-wide, says it intends to start up in Nanaimo on Oct. 1.

Mandeep Rana, CEO of LTG Technologies, said Lucky to Go is up and running in Kelowna and Victoria. Nanaimo is next, and then the Comox Valley, he said.

“People need ride-share service wherever they are,” Rana said. “It’s a cheaper way to commute, it’s trackable, it’s easy to book. You know guaranteed that there’s a driver coming, you can look at how far away he is, how long it’s going to take to get to you, there is two-way communication with the driver either through phone or through text, [and it’s] cashless transactions.”

Lucky to Go says it’s the only ride-hailing company to be offering opportunities for full-time drivers, who will receive a guaranteed minimum wage plus bonuses. The company is also seeking casual drivers.

The Lucky to Go app will be able to be used not only to book rides, but also to have food delivered once it has partnered with local restaurants, Rana said.

As far as COVID-19 precautions, he said the company asks drivers to wear masks, keep hand sanitizer in their vehicles, and clean and sanitize vehicle interiors and touch points between rides. The company also asks that customers follow health and safety precautions.
