Safe disposal of drugs urged

Medications that are expired or unused should be taken back to the pharmacy, association says.

The local pharmacy is the best place to dispose of old medications that are expired or unused.

The BC Pharmacy Association is urging households to clean out medicine cabinets of products that could pose a risk through improper use.

B.C.’s Medications Return program (www.medicationsreturn.ca) helps coordinate the safe, free disposal of unwanted pharmaceuticals at pharmacies.

It’s seen the volume of returned drugs double over the past four years to 36,000 kilograms last year.

“Please don’t flush your medications down the toilet or throw them in the trash,” added Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, who chairs Metro Vancouver’s zero waste committee.
