From July 18-29, the 100 Mile House Save-On-Foods will be fundraising for the Coalition of Riders Educating Youth (C.O.R.E.Y.) foundation.
The foundation was started by Kitimat Overwaitea Foods employee Denise Lodge 11 years ago after her son, Corey, died in a motorcycle accident.
Lodge’s mission is to promote motorcycle safety and help improve riding regulations.
100 Mile House Save-On-Foods store is helping Lodge with its upcoming fundraiser and barbecue. The funds garnered will go towards Lodge’s accommodation and transportation as she travels Northern B.C. promoting the C.O.R.E.Y. foundation.
All Save-On-Foods stores in the Northern British Columbia region are taking part in this fundraiser in 2016.
Each participating store has set a goal of raising $3,000.
A raffle for 100,000 Save-On-More points will be held at each store. Customers will be able to buy a ticket at the till – one ticket costs $2 or folks can get three for $5.
“We try to do as much as we can for the community and fellow employees,” says 100 Mile House Save-On-Foods assistant store manager Jake Martin.
“[Lodge] has worked at Overwaitea Foods [A Save-On-Foods affiliate chain] for 30 years and it’s a good message to send that [Save-On-Foods] wants to support one of its own.”
A barbecue will be held on July 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All food will be donated by the store. A smokey and a pop will be available for $4.
“It’s a good cause,” says Martin.
“There was a statistic in the press release about how motorcycle accidents make up 10 per cent of road fatalities [between 2008 and 2012]. That figure speaks for itself.”
