Jessica Vliegenthart, left, tells the story of how she lost the use of her legs at age 20 while working as a forestry firefighter in 2004. Vliegenthart, who plays on Canada’s senior women’s national wheelchair basketball team, was the featured guest speaker at the National Day of Mourning observance held at Pioneer Plaza. About 40 people turned out for the event, hosted by the Nanaimo, Duncan and District Labour Council.
