Surrey hosts youth employment fair May 7

Surrey’s only hiring fair exclusively for youth is getting geared up for this year.

Young people between the ages of 15 and 30, in search of employment and volunteer opportunities, are invited to the Surrey City Centre Library (room 120) on Wednesday, May 7 to attend the inaugural Pacific Community Resources Society Youth Job and Volunteer Fair. Local employers and organizations will be looking to inform youth about opportunities, best practices and company information.

“We’re excited how things are shaping up for this year’s fair,” says Lise Oakley, a community engagement coordinator with Pacific Community Resources Society. “We’re anticipating employers will be providing great opportunities for young job seekers, including full-time, part-time, seasonal, career and volunteer opportunities.”

Potential employers, from the hospitality, retail and volunteer industries, will be hiring in areas such as recreation, restaurant work and customer service – all under one roof. Volunteer organizations will be informing youth on various opportunities around the city.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for youth to find their ideal job and gather information,” says Oakley, “and it’s free for youth ages 15-30 to attend.”

Organizations such as Starbucks, H&M, Lush Cosmetics,Wendy’s, BC Hydro, Securiguard and The City of Surrey will be participating in this year’s event.

Youth are encouraged to bring their resumes, be dressed to impress, and be prepared for on-the-spot interviews. They will also have the opportunity to win prizes at the fair.

The inaugural Youth Job and Volunteer Fair is an initiative of Pacific Community Resources Society Youth Resource Centres, the Fleetwood/Guildford Employment Centre (WorkBC) and the Baristas Program.

The Fleetwood/Guildford WorkBC Employment Centre provides free year-round career planning and employment services – such as hiring fairs, one-on-one career counselling, resume writing and job search assistance – to people between the ages of 15 and 30.
