As the seasons continue to change, things are getting busy for Todd Craig, owner and operator of Rocky Mountain Chimney Sweeps.

Craig started the business in Golden about five years ago, but has been involved in the industry since high school.

“My dad, who is 77, still operates a chimney sweep business in Port Alberni. He is still climbing up on roofs, so it is a part of the family,” Craig said.

After recognizing a need for the service in and around Golden Craig made the decision to test out the market.

“Things have been good. I also work as a mountain guide as my main job but this is a great supplement as well,” he said. “It is in the fall mostly but I still climb up on roofs in the winter and other seasons as people need me.”

Heading into fall, Craig is preparing for a busy time for the next few months. He also thinks there are many reasons why people need to make sure their chimneys are well maintained.

“The air quality is one, and just the efficiency of their stoves,” he said. “It is also important for people to pay attention to how they are burning, and what they are burning.”

Craig said he tries to educate people when he cleans their chimneys about how and what they should burn to make their stoves more efficient. “Dry wood is the main thing, it has got to be seasoned…the moisture content makes for a a smokier fire that sticks to your chimney.”

As for the work itself, Craig said it is something he thoroughly enjoys doing.

“I love meeting people and getting up on the roofs while seeing a lot of country,” he said.

Craig also shared his view on burning wood in the area. “I believe we live in the land of wood, and we should be able to burn wood, but we have to burn it responsibly,” Craig said.
