Teck ‘trickle down’ hoped for

Relative contractual security and bonus could spark a spending spike in West Kootenay

Several million dollars could be injected into the local economy after Teck Trail Operations handed out signing bonuses to over 1,300 employees two weeks ago, but the question is how much of that money will stick.

The first installment was paid out roughly two weeks ago, and Local 480 president Doug Jones said that union members have been receiving “very positive feedback” from the community.

The agreement included the first ever five-year contract with a sizable signing bonus.

As for the Castlegar area, Manager Ron Cutler of Glacier Honda says the Teck contract had produced a noticeable trickle down effect.

“I can’t say we’ve sold a pile of cars because of it but it has influenced some sales,” said Cutler, adding that a number of buyers had indicated the agreement had helped them make the decision to purchase.
