Heather Steere is stepping down as the tourism and marketing manager for Wells Gray Country and District of Clearwater.
“We’re certainly sorry to see her go,” said Ted Richardson, chair of Tourism Wells Gray. “She’s really helped to pull Tourism Wells Gray forward.”
Steere gave notice several weeks ago and her resignation takes effect today, Nov. 21. Advertisements have gone out and there are already 10 applicants from as far away as New Brunswick, Vancouver Island, Nunavut and China.
“I just felt it was time for a change,” said Steere, who plans to spend the winter at Sun Peaks, doing contract work, and then go to university next year and complete her Master’s degree.
During her almost three years in the position she helped get Tourism Wells Gray up and running. With the collection of a local hotel tax, that organization should now have secure funding, she felt.
Marketing the area through an upgraded website and social media has given the area an improved international presence.
Applying for UNESCO World Heritage and GeoPark status could have a big and positive impact as well, she said.
“I definitely enjoyed my time here, but it’s exciting to be moving forward,” Steere said. “It’s all good.”
