Trading Post brews new scholarship

TP will also be hosting first Fort Langley Beer and Food Fest May 20

Trading Post Brewing is committing $5,000 over the next five years to the Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Brewing Lab for the next generation of craft brewers. The scholarship is named after John Mitchell, who is known as the grandfather of the craft beer movement in Canada. He opened Canada’s first modern day craft brewery, Horseshoe Bay Brewing, in 1982.

“John Mitchell stands for quality brewing. Given that Trading Post is connected to the school, by being just down the street and with students working part time at TP, we thought that it would be fitting for TP to give back to the craft beer industry in John Mitchell’s name,” says Lance Verhoeff, General Manager and Founder of Trading Post Brewing.

“Trading Post’s values include building community and quality. Supporting the local brewing school to help develop high quality brewers for the craft beer industry is in total alignment with what we stand for,” says Tony Dewald, head brewer.

Criteria for the scholarship includes a student who volunteers, with a GPA of 3.00 or greater, full-time first year student.

The scholarship may increase over the next five years.

Trading Post will be hosting the first annual Fort Langley Beer and Food Festival May 20 and have dedicated a portion of the proceeds from this festival for years to come to support this scholarship.
