For my column today, I’m not going to talk about individual downtown stores—I want to focus on the feeling I get when I do my Christmas shopping in the downtown area.
It’s actually an experience, not a frantic rush of running around in a big box store trying to cross things off a list. Instead, I feel a sense of wonder as I look in each window and marvel over the beautiful and artfully arranged merchandise in every window.
I walk into the warmth of a shop and chat, person-to-person, with store owners and dedicated staff who know the story behind every item. That’s so important when you’re buying a gift for someone you care about.
I stroll up the street to find the next delightful shop and learn the stories there. And then I take a break for hot chocolate and cookies in a charming cafe so I can mull it all over.
If I have one Christmas wish for everyone this year besides world peace, it’s that you give yourself the opportunity to experience this and add some relaxed and enjoyable shopping time to your Christmas “To Do” list. I promise you will be amazed at the incredible variety of offerings in our downtown shops; you will be refreshed and intrigued by all the unique things you’ll see; and you’ll be supporting local merchants who have worked so hard to bring you a huge array of shopping goodies.
Check out the Downtown Kelowna Association’s website for info on the “Spot Santa”contest too. Post a photo of Santa and you could be a winner!
One last thing—don’t forget that parking on the street and in city-owned lots is free on Saturdays during December (thank you, City of Kelowna) and free on Sundays all through the year. Could it be any easier?
Have a beautiful holiday season, and I hope you get to enjoy downtown.
