Langley Township could soon see a construction boom, as a large number of development permits were approved in February.
The number of permits issued has increased, as has the number of dwelling units created.
As has been the pattern in recent years, the vast majority of the development will be in Willoughby, and most of the homes created will be in multi-family developments, either townhouses or condos.
The Township stats show 147 dwelling units were created in February, up from 74 in the same month in 2015.
Of those, 93 were multi-family homes – either townhouses or condos – 28 were single family homes, and 22 were secondary suites. Another four were mobile homes.
Robert Cesaretti, the Township’s manager of permits, licenses, and inspections, said some of the permit applications are coming from multi-stage developments.
“I’d say our applications have been steady for the last year,” Cesaretti said. There hasn’t been a sudden rush by developers all at once, but the number of applications last year was up, and now those permits have worked their way through to approval.
Cesaretti said there could be a lot of construction coming in the wake of an increase in permits issued.
As usual, most of the construction will come in Willoughby, the Township’s most populous and fastest-growing neighbourhood.
From January through February, 76 per cent of all the homes built in Langley were in Willoughby.
The remainder were mainly spread across rural areas at 10 per cent of the total, or in Murrayville or Brookswood-Fernridge, each of which saw five per cent of the total.
