Up against 62 stores in both large and small centres, Windsor Plywood Williams Lake came out victorious.

The store on MacKenzie Avenue won the coveted Al Wightman award for Store of the Year in 2010 at the company’s annual general meeting in Februrary.

Owner/manager Daryle Halfnights was on hand to receive the honour presented at the Pacific Rim Fairmont Hotel in Vancouver.

The award is based on performance and Halfnights attributes the win of his store over larger ones, in Edmonton or Calgary for example, to “a great customer base — loyal customers who have helped our sales and growth.”

He also credits his staff as instrumental in the win.

Halfnights, who bought into ownership in 2005, acknowledges stores have to be strong in all areas to win the award. Windsor Williams Lake was up against stores across Canada and the company’s four U.S. locations.

Through his six years with the store he’s seen a lot of changes in the local economy and he thinks it’s outstanding to win this title in a year that was economically challenging.
