Fridays this summer, we’ll publish a list of 10 Things to Do in Surrey — a chance to explore new places and events in the area. Email us your favourite things to do in Surrey, edit@surreynowleader.com.
1. GET ROLLING
Billed as Metro Vancouver’s largest indoor amusement park, the year-old Central City Fun Park features a roller rink with stringed lights overhead. Admission for skating is $10 for adults and $8 for kids, with free skate/helmet rentals, at 11125 124th St. There’s also mini golf, bowling and dozens of arcade games to play, including Hologate VR. More details are posted on centralcityfunpark.com.
2. BIKE FLEETWOOD
While cycling around Fleetwood, lock up your ride on “The Frasers,” artful bike racks created by Laara Cerman for use around the neighbourhood. “The design depicts the diagonal Fraser Highway, though the same lines may also represent the Fraser River,” says a post on surrey.ca. “One of the most iconic sights in Fleetwood is included: the breathtaking Mount Baker. The form of the bike rack is a tree shape, which references Fleetwood’s many wooded areas. In only a few lines, Cerman has captured the values and assets of this unique community in the heart of Surrey.”
3. PLACE A BET
Located in Cloverdale, Elements Casino Surrey is the city’s go-to place for poker, blackjack, 500 slot machines and more, 24/7, with live harness racing at Fraser Downs. For the latest, visit elementscasinosurrey.com.
101 THINGS TO DO IN SURREY THIS SUMMER.
It's a big list. Here it is again!@SurreyNowLeader @DiscoverSurrey #SurreyBC https://t.co/cDN23QoFQ6 pic.twitter.com/F2fWuDxode— Tom Zillich (@TomZillich) July 8, 2021
4. WATCH HOCKEY
The junior version of the on-ice game is played by the PJHL’s Surrey Knights at North Surrey Sport & Ice Complex, a three-sheet facility opened in the fall of 2019 at 10950 126A St. Elsewhere, the Olympic-size ice surface of South Surrey Arena is home to Surrey Eagles, a BCHL team for which some current NHLers once played. Training camps are happening now, so get tickets now to watch a game this fall/winter.
5. GO ‘PLOGGING’
Ever gone “plogging”? The City of Surrey hopes residents do, as part of its current Love Where You Live cleanup campaign. With roots in Sweden, plogging combines jogging or walking and picking up litter. In Europe it’s become an increasingly popular way to stay fit and while keeping neighbourhoods clean. Give it a try.
6. LEARN TO WRITE
Registration opened months ago for the 2021 edition of Surrey International Writers’ Conference (SiWC), held virtually for a second straight year, from Oct. 18-24. In a non-pandemic year, the annual event fills Guildford’s Sheraton hotel with close to 700 delegates. Visit siwc.ca for more details.
7. SEE ‘SIGN OF SIGNS’
A sign that changes with the wind, Alan Storey’s “Sign of Signs” photo-based art is designed to resemble a billboard. Located on a south wall of Surrey Operations Centre (6651 148th St.), this wind-driven kinetic sculpture poetically captures the transformation of Surrey’s landscape through three spliced photographs spanning 80 years.
8. GOLF WHERE THE PROS DID
Surrey’s Northview Golf and Country Club hosted PGA tournaments from 1996 to 2002, first as the Greater Vancouver Open and later as the Air Canada Championship. It’s where Mike Weir became the first Canadian in 45 years to win a PGA Tour event on Canadian soil 22 years ago, on Sept. 5, 1999. Weir amazed everyone by holing out for an Eagle 2 that Sunday afternoon. “The 159-yard downwind 8 iron landed softly on the front of the green and rolled into the cup dead center,” says a plaque on the hole.
9. MEET AT THE MARKET
Operators of Surrey Urban Farmers Market have found a new home at Royal Kwantlen Park, every second Saturday this summer from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than a dozen vendors set up in the parking near the corner of 104th Avenue and Old Yale Road on select dates, including Aug. 28, Sept. 11, Sept. 25 and Oct. 9. Vendors are sought for the market, with details posted to surreymarket.org. Check facebook.com/surreymarket for the latest.
10. TRUCK IT FOR ARCADE GAMES
Bring the party to your house by booking the Arcade Party Truck (arcadepartytruck.com), which is filled with arcade games for all-ages occasions. A two-hour party package goes for $459.99 plus tax, so maybe your neighbours want to pitch in.
