A hundred days for a hundred paintings

The Waterfront Gallery will have a centennial celebration of sorts on display from April 29 to 30.

The Waterfront Gallery will have a centennial celebration of sorts on display from April 29 to 30.

Fourteen artists, who made resolutions in January to do one painting a day for 100 days, completed their challenge in early April, and will exhibit their works and make them available for sale at the gallery, which is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Leona Petrak, who initiated the Hundred Day Artist Challenge said the experience tested her resolve and stretched her talent.

“The first 50 days sailed by happily,” she said. But like all New Years resolutions, the time arrived when the artists had to dig deep.

“It was day 80 when I hit the wall, but I think I did my best work in the last 20 days,” Petrak said.

In the last 10 days artists who had fallen behind were ‘madly painting’ to catch up, then ‘voila, the challenge was over.’

As well as about 1,400 paintings, the experience pushed artistic boundaries.

“The challenge saw improved content, brush strokes, creativity, artists taking new directions, and lots of creativity,” said Kathy Holmes, president of the Ladysmith Arts Council.
