A musical message of making every moment count

Right Here, Write Now! comes to Surrey stage for two shows Nov. 29, raising funds for various charities.

It’s a musical about self-discovery, identity and empowerment.

And the themes are ones singer Alyssa Gutierrez, who stars in the original production Right Here, Write Now!, is easily inspired by.

“The theme of the show also relays the message of making a difference in your life right at this moment,” says Gutierrez, a Grade 11 Surrey student. “As a young person, this strongly speaks to me, but people of all ages can relate to this, too.”

The musical, which comes to Surrey Nov. 29, was created by RJ and Liza Jose, together with their children, Mikey (who wrote the score) and Tricia (who wrote the lyrics). It opens with a group of friends sharing stories as they prepare for their graduation day, and one girl’s journey as she discovers her own story.

The cast is comprised mainly of young adults and teens who’ve been rehearsing weekly for more than six months.

Gutierrez was urged to audition by her piano teacher, but was initially reluctant because although she’s an accomplished singer (she was this year’s winner of the PNE Star Search talent competition), she had no prior experience in musical theatre. Now, she can’t imagine not being a part of the show.

“What I love most about this project is that it’s all about community; a group of people from all ages coming together to serve the poor through our time and talents.”

Funds raised from the Surrey show will benefit ANCOP (Answering the Cry of the Poor), St. Matthew’s Parish, Holy Cross High School and HIV-infected children in Africa.

“Through this production, we will be performing for those in need of help and spreading a message of hope around the world,” says Gutierrez, who attends Holy Cross Regional High School.

Right Here Write Now! will be at the Bell Performing Arts Centre (6250 144 St.) for two shows on Nov. 29, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $25, available at bellperformingartscentre.com or by calling 604-507-6355.
