The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra opened its 2016-2017 Season with Symphonic Splendour, a rich tapestry of lush symphonic works.

The concert began with Kodály’s Dances of Galanta.  Masterful orchestration combined with a toe-tapping finale put a smile on every face and was an inspired opening to this concert of symphonic standards.  Kudos to Erin Fung on clarinet for her haunting recurring solos.

The next work featured Canadian born violinist Lara St. John performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major.  This concerto, a “Mount Everest” in the world of violin music, was performed exquisitely by St. John.  From the sweeping melodies and technical fireworks of the first and second movements to the relentless Cossack dance-like finale, St. John effortlessly tossed off virtuosic passages with ease and panache.  Both soloist and orchestra received a resounding standing ovation at the conclusion.

The evening was rounded out by a performance of Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major.   Good, solid orchestrations marked this work—satisfying and no nonsense. Thomson’s interpretation had clear direction as themes were woven together to reach poignant moments of tension and release. Kudos to French Horn player Scott Wilson for his fine solos.

Congratulations Maestra Thomson and the entire Symphony organization for presenting such a fine season opener.
