An Abbotsford actor is the leading man in a play presented tonight (Friday) and tomorrow in Surrey.

Pat McDermott stars as Jack in the Royal Canadian Theatre Company’s production of Opening Night by playwright Norm Foster and directed by Ellie King.

The antics begin as Jack’s wife, Ruth Tisdale, a theatre lover, wins a pair of tickets to the opening-night performance of a new Canadian play.

It’s a dream come true for Ruth and an imposition for Jack as he’s dragged to the theatre to celebrate their 25th anniversary; he would rather be at home watching the seventh game of the World Series.

Jack and Ruth are mingling with guests before the show in the VIP lounge, when Jack spots someone he recognizes from TV.

Hilarity ensues, reaching its peak when the audience finally witnesses the “performance” of what must be one of the worst plays ever written.

The production takes place at 7:30 p.m. on March 17 and 18 and 3:30 p.m. on the 18th at the Surrey Arts Centre, 13750 88 Ave.

It also runs March 24 and 25 at ACT Arts Centre, 11944 Haney Place in Maple Ridge.
