Abbotsford event helps buy goats for girls in Ethiopia to pay for education

Taves Estate Cidery holds Give a Girl a Goat celebration on Sept. 7

An event taking place Monday, Sept. 7 in Abbotsford will raise money to help girls in rural Ethiopia pay for their education.

The Give a Girl a Goat celebration day at Taves Estate Cidery (333 Gladwin Rd.) runs from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and invites people to pay towards the cost of a goat and, in exchange, see singer Ryan McAllister in concert, visit the petting barn, cuddle some goats, see the sunflower patch, visit the GOATerdays playground, go on a hay ride and more.

The event is being held in collaboration with Abbotsford’s Run for Water and Envision Financial. The money goes towards helping poor girls in rural Ethiopia earn an education.

The project empowers young girls to pay for school by providing them with a goat and training to care for their goat.

They can then sell the offspring to pay for their rent in town, their schooling, education materials, tutoring and uniforms.

Those who purchase one of the goat packages receive one admission to the entire farm.

Those who purchase the full-goat package receive two admissions plus two tickets to one of McAllister’s show.

The concerts take place at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. and will have a limit of 46 people. The cost is $10. Physical-distancing protocols will be in place.

Those who don’t purchase a goat package can buy passes at the ticket booths on the farm for individual activities.

All tickets can also be purchased online at tavesestatecidery.com under “our events.”
