Abbotsford swing dance club helps to restore historic hall

Suburban Swing has moved to a new location at Matsqui Community Hall

An Abbotsford swing dance group is getting ready for its new season of dances in a new location.

Suburban Swing has moved from the Abbotsford Social Activity Association (ASAA) hall to the historic Matsqui Community Hall at 33676 St. Olaf Ave.

The group now holds beginner dance classes all day Sunday and on Sunday night, starting Sept. 8. The six-week class runs until Oct. 20.

Suburban Swing began in 1998 at University of the Fraser Valley, and was at the ASAA hall for 19 years.

Now that the volunteer-based group is at the almost 100-year-old Matsqui Hall, they are helping to restore it. One company has already donated $6,000 in paint, and another company is donating $1,000 in lights and scaffolding.

The fire department next door to the hall is helping with the upkeep. Suburban Swing is hoping that more companies will get involved or that more people will donate.
