Abbotsford Traditional Secondary presents its production of the hit musical Annie this week at the Abbotsford Arts Centre (2329 Crescent Way).
The show takes place for the public on Friday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances for school audiences take place Tuesday to Thursday of this week.
The Broadway musical is based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie and is set in the 1930s.
It tells the story of an orphan who must live in a miserable orphanage run by the tyrannical Miss Hannigan.
Annie’s seemingly hopeless situation changes dramatically when she is selected to spend a short time at the home of the wealthy Oliver Warbucks, who decides to help her find her long-lost parents by offering a reward if they come forward and prove their identity.
However, Miss Hannigan, her evil brother Rooster and a female accomplice concoct a scheme to get the reward for themselves.
The original Broadway production opened in 1977, ran for nearly six years and spawned countless productions in many countries.
The songs Tomorrow and It’s the Hard-Knock Life are among its most popular numbers.
The Abbotsford production is directed by Grant Gasser and Janet Wade.
Tickets are available at the school (2272 Windsor St.) or at the door for each performance. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
