Brigadoon Dance Academy is bringing a little bit o’ Scotland to Nanaimo.
The academy presents its 17th annual Pride of Scotland on Sunday (June 9) at 2:30 p.m. at the Port Theatre. The show features more than 100 Island dancers.
Jillian Peacock, a dancer performing in the show, said she loves highland dancing because it’s challenging.
“It is something that you can never perfect, but perfection is the goal,” she said.
She said the show expands people’s horizons about the different dances people pursue.
During the Western Canadian Championships this spring Peacock received gold in all of her dance categories for the 16-17- year-old bracket. The dancer, who is from Comox, has trained with Nanaimo’s Brigadoon dance Academy for 10 years.
In May, Nanaimo’s Rachel Bramley received one gold, one silver and a second runner-up during the B.C. Closed Highland Dancing Championships.
Pride of Scotland also features special guests Tamara Cameron, Bill Poppy and Christopher McBride on the pipes; drummer Ryan Wiley and dancer Cameron Collins. Tickets are $18/$15 for seniors, students and groups of 10 or more and $10 for children and are available by calling 250-754-8550 or online at www.porttheatre.com.
